Transforming Literacy Instruction for Over 40 Years

For more than four decades, the California Reading & Literature Project (CRLP) has partnered with educators across the state to elevate literacy teaching and learning. We believe that every California student deserves access to high-quality, rigorous, and comprehensive literacy instruction—instruction that honors their identities, builds on their assets, and meets their individual needs.

At CRLP, we center teachers as learners and leaders, ensuring they have the knowledge, tools, and a professional community to support students in becoming confident, capable, and critically engaged readers and writers. Our work is simple yet powerful: to ensure all California students graduate as broadly literate individuals prepared for higher education, the workforce, and civic life.

What We Do

CRLP develops and delivers transformative professional learning grounded in research, collaboration, and the California ELA/ELD Framework. Our work includes:

  • Teacher Leadership Development: We cultivate teacher leaders who collaborate with university faculty and researchers to build and refine CRLP’s professional learning content.

  • High-Quality Literacy Professional Learning: Our programs support PK–12 educators in reading instruction, content/disciplinary literacy, and academic language development.

  • Strong School & District Partnerships: We work directly with schools and districts to design learning experiences that are relevant, comprehensive, and aligned with local needs.

All CRLP programs are shaped by a commitment to equity, access, and instructional excellence.

Why CRLP?

CRLP advances literacy education statewide by:

  • Deepening Educators’ Expertise: Our professional learning strengthens teachers’ content knowledge, instructional practice, and leadership capacity.

  • Sustaining a Statewide Network: We maintain a robust professional network that supports teachers in reading, literature, and academic language instruction.

  • Building Professional Learning Communities: We help cultivate collaborative, supportive educator communities that increase teacher retention, grow instructional effectiveness, and improve outcomes for ALL California students.
