Content Area Language and Literacy (CALL)

call.pngThe CALL approach to lesson design and delivery offers an in-depth understanding of the relationship between language arts standards and subject-area content. Grounded in current research, CALL teaches best practices in discipline-specific content and reading instruction. It provides teachers with routines that help students master course content. Teachers are guided through a systematic approach to text and task analysis that can be applied to any content area. The CALL multi-day program is taught by secondary classroom teachers who have demonstrated success in their content and have been trained in the CALL approach to literacy.

What you will learn

  • Best practices in backward lesson design.
  • Instructional routines for teaching content, including the language demands of content that is specific to a discipline (Math, Science, History/Social Studies, etc.)
  • Comprehension monitoring strategies to implement with challenging subject-matter content.
  • Specialized strategies to support your work with students from low-income families and English Language learners.

Program Highlights

  • Instruction from current classroom teachers who are past participants of the CALL program.
  • Opportunities to role-play instructional routines.
  • On-site classroom coaching to support integration of routines.
  • Personalized assistance for reading specialists and educational support teams.

Is CALL for me?"I was introduced to a new strategy for building background knowledge. I liked how it was "just enough" and not too revealing of the upcoming text."

The CALL program can help any teacher deepen their skills in content area instruction. CALL is particularly beneficial for middle and high schools who are working to:
  • Accelerate student reading achievement in all subject matter content
  • Augment their Title I plan
  • Support English language learners
  • Onboard teachers new to teaching in grades 6-12
